(Home Based) Save the Children Graduate Student Summer Internship

Context

Save the Children is the world’s leading independent organization for children, working in 117 countries with more than 25,000 staff. In April 2020, Save the Children launched the Center for Utilizing Behavioral Insights for Children (CUBIC) in Asia. CUBIC is the first “nudge unit” in the world to focus specifically on the most marginalized children’s rights and welfare. The goal is to apply behavioral science in order to reach more children and have an even greater impact on their lives.

Task Description

Projects

CUBIC is currently seeking a Master’s (or Ph. D.) level intern(s) to support its projects during the summer of 2024, including, but not restricted to:

  1. Reducing children’s engagement in hazardous work in Cote d’Ivoire. 
  2. Increasing childhood and pregnant women vaccination in the Philippines. 
  3. Enhancing code of ethics actions in the United States.
  4. Increasing student retention in El Salvador.
  5. Improving humanitarian targeting in Sri Lanka.
  6. Reducing child marriage and teenage pregnancy in Zambia and in the Philippines.
  7. Increasing safeguarding reporting in Ukraine.
  8. Ensuring girls attendprimary education in Afghanistan.
  9. Supporting activism among girls in China, Indonesia, Mexico and Vietnam.
  10. Increasing reporting of children’s sexual abuse in Spain.
  11. Various capacity-building  initiatives. 
  12. Improving time management skills and prioritization of tasks among SCI’s leadership.

Internship Objectives

The intern will be integrated into the 12-person CUBIC team and will have the opportunity to get involved in multiple projects – the expectation for the intern is that s/he would primarily contribute to:

  • Desk Review
  1. Conducting desk research that includes literature reviews, data availability, and project documentation on behavioral issues/previous evidence on specific topics etc.
  2. Conducting stakeholder/policy mapping.
  3. Providing help with Institutional Review Board (IRB) or Ethical Committee (EC) submissions.
  • Data analysis
  1. Conducting statistical analysis of existing surveys, census, other available datasets and impact evaluations (experience with STATA highly preferred; experience with SPSS and R programming is a plus).
  2. Coding and analyzing qualitative data.
  3. Presentation of data in compelling and comprehensible ways.
  • Analytical work
  1. Supporting the preparation of presentations at every stage of the project.
  2. Supporting the design of experiments (DOE).
  3. Drafting and/or editing project briefs, reports, and case studies.
  4. Drafting academic papers for journal submission, where results are suitable for publication.
  5. Assisting with behavioral design training sessions and capacity building initiatives.
  6. Other tasks as per the intern’s time and interest and needs of CUBIC.

Qualifications

Skills Required 

  • Must be enrolled in/or a recent graduate of a Master’s program in Social Psychology, Sociology, Economics, Behavioral Economics, Behavioral Science, Public Policy, Anthropology or a related field.
  • Candidates fluent in Spanish and/or French, in addition to English are encouraged to apply.
  • Strong qualitative or mixed methods skills for social research (experience working with data analysis software such as NVivo, ATLAS.ti or similar).
  • Strong quantitative, research, and data analytic skills (experience working with data analysis software such as STATA, R or Python).
  • Strong understanding of Behavioral Science concepts and methodologies.
  • Basic understanding of Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs).
  • Strong management, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent English communication and writing skills, and ability to present data and analysis in compelling and understandable formats.
